Forgive my recent silence, my fellow denizens. Somehow, in spite of everything, I have been somewhat "under the weather." It's taking quite the toll on my Renate, honestly, for I haven't really the energy to run with her at present. I'm feeling much better now, however. It seems, furthermore, that my relative absence has meant I have not provided sufficient occupation for all of my charges.

To my Inmate, you and I must talk and soon. Do not keep me waiting.

To the Inmate called Sylar -- I have this to say to you, without pretense or exaggeration: If I see or hear that you have been associating with mine again, there is not a single Warden on this ship, past or present, that will be fast enough to prevent my retort. Whatever advantage you hope to gain in soliciting him will not be worth the pain I bring upon you. Am I making myself perfectly clear?

[The Marquis entered and almost immediately pulled up a chair alongside his bed to sit and look at him.]

[Iago put down his book and just looked over to him.] Hello, Marquis. [His jaw was set stubbornly and was tense with anger, but it was controlled at the moment.]

Beginning to think you should have gone for that walk?

No. I don't want to go for a walk. I will go straight to Sylar's door and strangle him if I leave this room. [Or he might hurt Judas. That was his ultimate fear, though he wouldn't admit it now.]

And why is that?

[A bit of his emotion showed through and he threw the book across the room where it crashed into the wall.]

Because I'm angry!

[He's thrown too many tantrums in his lifetime to be terribly shocked by one.] Tell me why you are angry, Iago.

[Iago sighed and closed his eyes tightly, attempting to get himself under control again.]

Because he betrayed me.

[calmly] He feared for you and sought my aid in protecting you.

He went to you first. Now, Marquis, I do respect you, but Judas is my companion. But obviously that does not mean much to him if he will so easily go behind my back.

[The mess caused by the book was bothering him, so he stood up from his bed and went to pick it up.]

He panicked, Iago. And understandably so, if he thought that it was a matter you might actually go through with. And if I or Sexby had found out without one of the two of you telling us that would have been severely damaging to our ability to trust either of you. Do you want for us to move backwards?

[Iago shot him a dark look.] I don't care where you move, Marquis. I prefer it to be out of my room right now, but I just don't care.

I believe you have a story to tell me first. [Firmly] From the beginning. Recounting it may calm you some.

[Iago sighs and moves to a more comfortable position on his bed before starting.]

Sylar. We've been talking for a while now about nothing really in particular, but I thought he might be useful. So when he approached me at dinner several nights ago to talk about a murder, I was intrigued. I didn't want to do it, Marquis. You know that's not how I work. I'm not an assassin. But I wanted to know who the target was, just in case it might be useful. He told me the name- Robert Capa- and then told me that if I went through with it, I should blame it on him.

[Again, Iago stood and began to pace.]

But that if I didn't do it, then I shouldn't betray him. Two days later, he told Judas and we are in this mess now.

[The soldier let out a soft sigh.]

I should have known he would. He was extremely interested in our relationship.

[He allows a moment to consider all that has been said, and with each second passing he just feels all the more justified in how he addressed Sylar.]

Are you at all certain that this current predicament is not what he had intended from the start?

No. I don't believe he thought that far ahead. [Iago sat down again and just ran his fingers through his hair.]

But what's done is done.

In telling Judas, then. Do you think he did not plan for you to react this way?

[Iago shrugged.] Oh, that? I'm sure he meant for Judas to react that way. I'm sure that he wanted to cause dissent between us. And it worked.

Only if you allow him to have his way. It's a pitiful creature indeed that must destroy the happiness in others when he has none of his own.

[Iago shook his head.] No, Marquis. I know now what I should have seen in Judas before. What I should have guessed. I will not tolerate his betrayal.

[patiently] Judas is guilty of nothing but what he has always been guilty of -- being unable to control his emotions. If he had meant to betray you he would have done it to harm you. He cannot have known that you never intended to go through with Sylar's offer, because you kept it from him and let Sylar fabricate what the 'truth' was for him. That he told me is one thing, but I also gave him ample time to approach you before I addressed the matter.

[Annoyed, Iago takes up pacing again.] Yes, we spoke. He claims he wanted to help me. I don't want him to "help" me. He's not supposed to help me. He's supposed to be loyal and stay loyal.

He is your friend, not your servant.

He is my companion, not my warden.

And if you had agreed to murder this man, Iago? What if you had gone through with it, for whatever reason. Pretend, for just a moment, that this person had wronged you, or that for whatever reason you were indebted to Sylar and had agreed this would be what made the two of you even. Bearing in mind everything that would undo, between the two of us. Even just in yourself. Should Judas Iscariot still have kept his silence? Should he have allowed you to bring harm to yourself? Because until recently, that was all he knew.
