This post is to just sort of put into line some of the things that have developed into Head-Canon for the Marquis, not because I started with all these assumptions about the character or the movie, but because playing him in one game for more than five years has led some of these things to come up in conversation, and I've been required to construct answers. I will do my best to explain them to the best of my ability.
People who find this journal may have questions about the character, or view him as different from how they expected. One must bear in mind this character has been in one game for almost five and a half years. 1 1/2 years were spent devoted to an ongoing redemption arc, as fits the premise of the game. He HAS changed in some ways. This post just sort of covers some of the whys, along with canon assumptions.
Table of Contents:
1. Was the Marquis de Sade sane at the time of his death?
2. Why does the Marquis go crazy specifically when he's alone for too long?
3. Why doesn't the Marquis talk so dirty anymore?
4. Why is the Marquis a Warden?
5. What are the Marquis' sexual preferences? What is his stance on BDSM?
( Was the Marquis de Sade sane at the time of his death? )
( Why does the Marquis go crazy specifically when he's alone for too long? )
( Why doesn't the Marquis talk so dirty anymore? )

...I'm afraid it's time.
I've made my arrangements, said many of my goodbyes. Tomorrow morning I will be departing this ship. Time, enough, therefore, that if anyone should want for me, they may find me in my cabin for much of the day.
I do want to say that I regret very little of the time I spent here. As an Inmate first and the person I've become since, I believe myself a testament to the good this place can do. I'm this way because of the help I received from friends and loved ones. I achieved this without strongly involving myself in the affairs of other Wardens. I treated my Inmates as I wished to be treated in return.
Thank you, all of you, and good luck to those of you that need it. Do your best. Try. Don't give up.
[Private to Iris]
I need a word with you, specifically. It's urgent.

Aug. 12th, 2014 04:09 pmHello and welcome home, lovelies. I hope our last outing treated you well. To those new arrivals with whom I've yet to meet -- well, I suppose the point in introducing myself now is so that you can say you met me. The Marquis de Sade -- for the moment, at your service.
[ A cordial bow to the camera, all the same. But then he looks a little uncomfortable, but resigned. ]
I never thought I would be saying this, but it is time. Nearly seven years, I've lived on this ship -- a portion of that as an Inmate. I've written and sent pornography to angels, done battle with the undead but also enjoyed some lovely conversations with a few. I've fallen in love -- more than once. I've died. [ An odd pause. He frowns. ] I've even killed. Read books. Sang songs. Made a friend or two. Flirted with comely fellows, and found myself lucky.
Also unlucky on occasion. [ A little smile and wink. ]
The point is that in all those years, I've lived in relative happiness despite the chaos. I wish to believe I've become a better man than I ever was for even a moment in life.
...I'm also ready to return to living outside of the Barge. Yes, by the end of the month, I expect to have departed. I have arrangements to make first. Goodbyes to say. A severance package to negotiate. [ Smirk. ] While I believe there is much good I can do here, and have done, I also believe it is for others to look after Inmates, now, fond as I am of my current charge. I have the greatest of faith that the lot of you will take care of him for me, but as for myself?
I feel it's time someone looked after me for a while, and I've kept someone waiting for too long.

"Be careful what you wish for," indeed!
I apparently owe several people very deep apologies for being an unforgivable little cad the last few days. I was...a bit of a handful in my youth, to say the least. Apologies if you were uncomfortable, at the very least, and apologies that all you have left to enjoy is the ugly mortal who stands before you now.
To my Inmate especially: I apologies for being "affectionate" toward you, but we really must have a talk about the difference between "affection" and "harassment" and where your rights stand as far as that goes. In the future, should I become a younger version of myself again, do as you did, here, and avoid my presence.
...to those of you wondering, because this is the Barge and a few things seemed to take him by surprise, know that if you had a private tryst with him, you are likely safe and healthy.
Finally, someone appears to have absconded with my two favorite waistcoats. I would be happy to request a couple replicas for you, but those are garments I've kept well over the years, and they have sentimental value. All I ask is that you return them in the same state you found them in.

[Someone appears to have gotten the hang of this device quickly, despite never having seen the like before. He's...oddly familiar. It's the eyes, the arch of his brow, the lips. ...And then of course there's all the stuff in the background, including a familiar dog, the fireplace, bookcases...
The Marquis is either looking VERY good for seventy-eight, better than normal, or...]
Such a wonder, this pretty little thing. I see the entries, and I see they are in my diction, with my name on them -- but the man in the pictures -- he's so very old. I cannot deny his resemblance to some of my kin. A little of my father. So much of my mother.
[He purses his cherub lips in a mixture of bemusement and frustration.]
Curious. Very curious. So tell me, lovelies. What manner of people does this secret kinsman of mine interact with, day by day? Is he a libertine such as I? Come now, don't be shy.

[The Marquis has never looked so reserved.]
That wasn't quite like the "comas" I have had before, though I will not lie and say I am not grateful it took me this time. I think...I rather think that my other self is dead. Moreso than usual, I mean.
Perhaps they finally tired of him. It would have to happen sooner or later, oui?
[He shakes his head and changes the subject. It's clear this has left him a little melancholy at the very least.]
...But best not to linger on such things. I'm sure many are in recovery, and others are new and likely very confused besides. What a poor first impression that place would have made!
It would also appear that the Admiral has wasted no time in sending me back to work. [He brings his new file to bear.]
Who, here, is Dark Heart, and can you do me the kindness of explaining to me what, exactly, a Care Bear is?
[ADDED LATER]
Admiral, as per usual, please deliver a copy of my file to Dark Heart's cabin.

Has Father Christmas come for an early visit, I wonder?
[He shows to the camera what appears to be a rather charming, if aged and weathered china doll. The manner of dress and the styling of the hair immediately put him in mind of Iris, so he looks just a bit cheeky as he shows it. Though it has the familiar cherub face of most china dolls -- yes, when one looks at her carefully, there's still almost a familial resemblance, and the Marquis is shown to be holding her very carefully.]
Such a charming little lady. Perhaps a little out of place among my other figurines, but she looks to have a secret or two about her, oui?
I wonder what I ought to call her?
(ooc: Fair warning! My paid account ran out, and I'm broke. I only regularly use a FEW of the icons that are available to me now. SO if you get a lot of default icon, I promise I'm not doing it to be a jerk.)

These floods are always so perplexing; it is hard to tell when you are affected when you make a point of answering every question posed to you anyway.
I am going to ask that my Inmate excuse my absence for the time being, because not knowing whether or not he is affected, I am not the sort to draw answers out that should be offered in confidence. I extend the same courtesy to all others as well.
You are free to ask me questions if you wish, however. Just bear in mind that I will return the favor.

I'm always hesitant to remark on a breach where I encountered very little to no trouble at all when I know that others experienced worse than I. Understanding that whatever I say may be viewed as insensitive at best, I'll simply state that all of that felt...far too familiar to me.
And while I am not about to claim that being of noble blood and a convenient scapegoat is more difficult than any other possible lot in life, I will re-iterate that it's hardly a stroll on the deck, either.

I suppose I'm lacking in a suitable mass of other writers aboard this ship to glean the answers I am hoping for, but I pose this question to the populous in general: Suppose you were writing your own history, and you came upon passages that you have no qualms discussing, but they happen to be rather private matters for another party. Do you wait for the opportunity to ask their permission, write the tale anyhow, or take another route entirely?
[Private to the Admiral]
I would like to request that Loki's abilities to create illusions be returned to him, with one stipulation: I want to be able to tell when he is using them, without him knowing.
Rather underhanded, I know, but this is just as much for the safety of others, against whom he might use those powers, as it is for mine and his protection.
I need not be given the ability to see through them completely, but some outward sign -- a tinge to the eye color, a visible ripple in space, something of that nature.
[Spam for Loki, set Before the Post]
[While his Inmate remained abed he let himself in to check on him. As the days wore on, periodic checks became extended vigils, as such that he might spend several hours reading and keeping watch. At present he's delving through Voltaire's Candide.]

My, ah -- apologies to anyone that I offended during that flood. I wasn't especially given to pleasantries as an Inmate and when I was it was often with an ulterior motive.
If nothing else it gives one perspective, doesn't it? I've often said I didn't truly change, but the evidence certain speaks for itself, oui?

Feb. 16th, 2014 11:05 amWell, that was rather unexpected.
My apologies for my sudden absence, especially so close on the heels of the last. [An uncomfortable clearing of his throat.] So tell me, dear neighbors: What excitements have I gone and missed?
[Something off-camera catches his eye and he perks up.]
Other than a new assignment, apparently!
[He picks up the file, and upon reading a couple lines looks positively tickled.]
Loki Laufeyson. It appears we need to have a little chat soon, and you have my deepest apologies for my initial absence. We shall have to begin in earnest to rectify this. In the meantime, however!
Admiral, please see to it that a fully updated copy of my file be delivered to Monsieur Laufeyson as soon as possible.
As for everyone else, my dearest friends and loves, I'll be out and about soon to greet you in person. I feel we must all have a visit lest I pop out of existence again and miss the opportunity.
