I doubt you are enjoying yourself as much as I am, so I have a proposal. Come to my cabin. We'll sit and talk -- or rather ask questions. I am affected -- I do not know if you are, but I have little reason to suppose you are not. So better to ride it out in a safe place, oui? And with all hope the flood shall have concluded by tomorrow.

[Renate's barking alerted him to someone at the door more than the knock did, which he didn't initially hear. The Marquis was not expecting the bruise. He blinked when he opened the door, but chose not to interrogate him in the hallway.]

Come in.

[Iago slipped through the door lazily, patting his leg in the hope that Renate would come to him.]

Hello, Marquis.

[Renate does one better and is jumping up. The Marquis shuts the door and moves into the chamber, always warmly lit.]

Did Monsieur Iscariot do that?

[Iago tried to push her down and just scratched her behind the ears as he follows after the Marquis. He laughed bitterly at the question.]

No. Sexby.

I didn't expect that. [He pours a goblet of wine and offers it to him.] And that was a question. My apologies; I hadn't intended to be the one to start.

It doesn't matter. I would have told you anyway. [He took the wine and contemplated just downing it in the hopes that he would just pass out quicker, but he decided to be a little classier than that.]

You know that Judas and I are no longer.... [He let that trail off and absently rubbed the place his ring used to be out of habit.]

[The Marquis sighed and took a seat, gesturing for Iago to do the same.]

And you are satisfied with this?

[Iago set his jaw and threw his formalities to the wind, sitting down and just swallowing the wine as quickly as he could.]

No. But I felt it was the right thing to do.

Why?

He walked out. I let him. I didn't want him to stay when he was hysterical. I can't stand the hysterics. [Iago stared at the floor, holding his empty goblet in his hands between his knees.]

He's always so dramatic. I wanted some peace and quiet from him. Away from him.

More?

[He offered to take his goblet from him]

Yes. [He handed it to him and resumed his position.]

And then he found my journal. My personal journal. And decided that it would be a good idea to read it over the network.

[He fills his goblet and hands it back to him, then serves one himself] I am not unaccustomed to the terrors that can come of written words reaching an unintended audience.

[Iago looked over to him after taking the wine.] You seem to do it so gleefully, though.

I do not mask my opinions of people, Iago. I do my best not to, at any rate. I wrote pornographies and they were placed in the hands of people who would not enjoy them. I cannot expect their reaction to be a positive one. But I also did not make them read it.

[He drank on his wine as the Marquis spoke and then shrugged.]

And yet they did.

I never wrote of anyone I cared for without telling them my intentions first. Madeleine, for instance. [Well. The less said on her, the better.] She understood they were only fictions.

What did you write about her? [He finished the wine and sat back, closing his eyes.]

I created a character inspired by her.

What did she say to it? [He searched around for Renate and then looked back to the Marquis.]

[Renate pushed her nose under his hand.]

She found it humorous. [A slow smile] She understood my work perhaps as it was meant to be read.

[Lazily, Iago scratched her behind her ears and just ran his fingers through her fur.]

At least she understood it. Judas read only three months of my entries and assumed those feelings carried over.

You were not writing fictions, Iago.

You were the one making the comparison. [He glanced to his empty goblet.] I don't normally allow this to happen, but if we're going to continue on this subject, I need to be a bit less sober.

You may ask me of anything you wish, Iago. [He refills him.] By all means, change the subject.
