I doubt you are enjoying yourself as much as I am, so I have a proposal. Come to my cabin. We'll sit and talk -- or rather ask questions. I am affected -- I do not know if you are, but I have little reason to suppose you are not. So better to ride it out in a safe place, oui? And with all hope the flood shall have concluded by tomorrow.

I could have asked you a question just now, but I did not. It is so rare I can find out what sorts of things people wonder about me. Given how many stories were written of me following my death, of course I welcome the opportunity to know.

The things I'd ask you would be more personal. About being here. About... it is hard to speak of such things. Even now.

Why did you stay?

Because I had finished my life back home and had nothing to return to. Also because I left Paviche behind. Henry.

All of my friends, really.

I know what you mean about friends. My life is far from over, but it will be hard to leave. I'm afraid of forgetting.

Some have chosen to go back and then return when they have had their fill of life.

It is the opposite for me. When I am ready to leave this place, or perhaps in need of time away, I will find Paviche.

I couldn't stay with Jack. He wouldn't want me to.

But it's good to know you had plans. Why have you kept your title?

I have always kept my title.

I wanted to know why you wanted to keep it. What it meant to you.

It's a moniker of youth, lesser responsibility -- naturally I kept it in my younger years. I now simply prefer it out of familiarity.
