222 [Before the Start of the Flood]

[He's a little beaten up, as you might be able to tell on the video.]

Disappointing news I'm afraid, my dears. Auditions will be a matter addressed after the port at the end of the month. I don't know about the rest of you, but I'll certainly feel more comfortable running lines with people after this place has gone back to normal.

I'm sure you're heartbroken, the lot of you.

The changes to the facilities don't especially agree with me, or Renate for that matter. [a bark in the background.] It leaves me feeling especially optimistic about what's to come.

[She patiently offers her paw when he begins to examine it and seems to understand he'll do no harm but there are still little 'please be nice to me' kisses on his hand along the way.]

I know. I know that doesn't feel good, honey.

[A soothing croon, and when he's checked her over to his satisfaction he tucks his chin briefly over her head and kisses between her ears.

He doesn't get up from his crouch, just sits there on his haunches and looks over at the Marquis, his face still unhappy.]

[His back is mostly to him, given the setting of his 'living room' but one can practically hear him smiling.]

I really don't enjoy seeing you bruised up.

Hm? [After a moment's silence and seeing Renate return to her favorite spot before the fire, he shifts a little.] Are you speaking to me now?

Sure. Applies to her too if you don't want it, though.

Of course I want it. I may joke but that doesn't mean I begrudge your concern.

I went in the CES after the Admiral announced the change. I saw what it was like, toxic and decaying... feral animals, crazy with pain and starvation.

I don't want anyone going in there alone, and definitely not if they're one of mine.

[A little chuckle. By now it's understandable that he doesn't truly make light of anything. It's just his way. If he's not dressing it up in some bawdy story he has a joke at its expense.]

So possessive. I shan't be returning, I can assure you as much.

Oh, you noticed about the possessive thing?

[He stands, stretching his legs, rocking from one foot to the other, and goes to claim a seat next to the Marquis.]

[He has to move a little to give him room.]

I may have taken note once or twice, oui.

[Riddick settles against him, careful of the leg, lays his cheek against the other man's hair with a frown. His voice drops to a more reasonable volume for someone who's so fully in someone else's personal space.]

I'm worried about this next port, wherever the admiral's so scared of us going. Worried something's gonna happen to someone I care about and I won't be able to stop it.

I can imagine. [He frowns.] It is likely inevitable, you realize. [Not that he sounds especially happy to admit that] You won't be able to find everyone.

I know.

[A whisper against skin as Riddick's arm hooks around his shoulder and grips him protectively.]

My track record ain't great.

I'll do my best to remain safe.

[He reaches up to stroke his arm.]

I promise.

[Riddick nods]

I'd kill to keep you safe, if you'd accept it. [Sort of resigned.]

I would rather you didn't kill anyone, Richard.

[Sigh]

Yeah. I'm aware. [You pain in the ass, his tone says, with fond resignation.]

But the thought is appreciated. [He frowns.] I apologize for worrying you.

Are you all right? Really? I don't mean your leg, I mean mentally. You can get... shaken sometimes.

Quite all right. A little restless, perhaps, but no more than I usually am when I've gone so long without an Inmate.

Same boat. I'm sorry you gotta wait on your play.

[A little laugh]

It's no worse than my last attempt, I assure you. Actors disappearing left and right until all I have left are extras and stage hands.

The barge ain't the most stable talent pool, I can imagine.

We'll manage this time. [He glances at him.] You might consider auditioning.
