My, ah -- apologies to anyone that I offended during that flood. I wasn't especially given to pleasantries as an Inmate and when I was it was often with an ulterior motive.

If nothing else it gives one perspective, doesn't it? I've often said I didn't truly change, but the evidence certain speaks for itself, oui?

So what actually did happen?

One of our former Inmates and I feuded for some time. This was merely one return of several. One would offend or attack the other and each response would be increasingly more distressing.

On this particular occasion, he'd broken into my cabin, stole my manuscripts, then disposed of them. I'm still not certain how.

Soon to follow would be a rather scandalous tale featuring him and a man whom he hated more than anyone. It was widely distributed over the ship, though not so man eyes saw it back then. The population was considerably smaller than it is now.

Quite. We only had the three floors once. Not even a Zero Level at that time; can you imagine?

That would certainly be a bit awkward.

But common practice back in those days. It was the man who stole my manuscripts who actually instituted Zero and a number of other changes we still use today.

My apologies for the confusion and my rather uncouth behavior, Mademoiselle. [Even though he was probably nicer to her than he was anybody else.]

Upon my graduation, one thing that I requested was to be given a bit of my youth back. For all intents and purposes I appear some twenty to twenty-five years younger than I was at my actual demise.

Still a man getting on in his years, to be sure. It only does so much to improve, ugly mortal that I am.

This ship is far too perilous for one not to look after their health however they may.

Besides, it is a rare one who deigns to take the arm of an old man.
