[Someone appears to have gotten the hang of this device quickly, despite never having seen the like before. He's...oddly familiar. It's the eyes, the arch of his brow, the lips. ...And then of course there's all the stuff in the background, including a familiar dog, the fireplace, bookcases...

The Marquis is either looking VERY good for seventy-eight, better than normal, or...]

Such a wonder, this pretty little thing. I see the entries, and I see they are in my diction, with my name on them -- but the man in the pictures -- he's so very old. I cannot deny his resemblance to some of my kin. A little of my father. So much of my mother.

[He purses his cherub lips in a mixture of bemusement and frustration.]

Curious. Very curious. So tell me, lovelies. What manner of people does this secret kinsman of mine interact with, day by day? Is he a libertine such as I? Come now, don't be shy.

[Bush harumphs, disapproving.]

Soldiers often do, I find. I'd rather be out at sea than anywhere, most days.

[He waves that off.]

I'm hardly a soldier anymore.

Gentlemen even moreso. [Bush lifts his chin.]

[He pouts] Oh dear, I believe I've gone and offended you, haven't I?

Not at all. I've only noted that gentlemen prefer the infantry and the infantry aren't suited for life at sea.

Some of us couldn't buy commissions; we had to earn'm.

Oh, I have offended you. [This seems to amuse him.] I did not buy mine either.

Well, you surprise me.

We shouldn't fight. [Despite his natural inclinations to quarrel with the French and with soldiers.]

If you truly wish to clash, I could certainly think of much more entertaining and less harmful ways for us to do that.

[Bush starts to scoff, but catches up to himself a moment later.

For a moment, he turns to regard the young Marquis. Perhaps not an instant refusal after all.]

You don't take much effort in trying to seduce.

[His frank blue eyes dare the Marquis to deny that it was his intention.]

[He takes another short sip of his wine, a smile playing at his lips.] If you wish me to refrain, all you need do is say so. That could be a waste of a perfectly good wish, however.

Perhaps I only want you to take a little more trouble.

[He eyes his wine.]

Or perhaps not. It ain't a romance.

Captain, I gave you wine, not flowers. Why would you think I care for romance?

Aren't you French, though? French and aristocratic.

Nevermind. I don't want flowers. I'll have more wine, though. And then we'll see.

That you think we're romantic as opposed to utterly depraved is almost flattering.

[He takes up the bottle to refill his glass for him.]

I'm prepared to believe both. [He cocks a brow, and drinks, this time deeply and intently, to fortify his courage. Perhaps there won't be a better time to make the experiment. Little enough will come of it, but he'll know something more about himself.]

And what am I to believe of Englishmen, then? [He doesn't refill his glass because he's been taking it slowly anyhow. Still an inch left in the goblet.]

Why, that we are decisive.

Or at the very least prepared to be decisive.

Put down your drink, then, if you think I've been dallying.

[With a coy smile, he downs the rest of his wine -- what little is left, and sets the goblet aside, eyebrow raised challengingly.]

[Bush puts his own glass down next to the first-- doing so necessitates him to step close, so that he looks face to face with the other man. He's the shorter of the pair by almost half of a foot, but doesn't appear to feel disadvantaged. He eyes the young man more challengingly than he would a woman under similar circumstances.]

All right, Frenchman. Teach me how you clash.

I have your permission, Englishman?

You have.

Good.

[He closes the distance between them and pulls him in for a kiss. It's pretty much always the best way to test the waters with a new person.]

[The reception is cold and stiff, at first-- but the moment that Bush decides to at least give it a reasonable try is palpable. It is a loveless clinch, but not too unlike a woman, and he knows how to handle a chance encounter with a woman. His arm goes around the other man's back out of habit, and his lips soften-- though he does try to have his way with the kiss, all leading and no following.]
