[Someone appears to have gotten the hang of this device quickly, despite never having seen the like before. He's...oddly familiar. It's the eyes, the arch of his brow, the lips. ...And then of course there's all the stuff in the background, including a familiar dog, the fireplace, bookcases...

Such a wonder, this pretty little thing. I see the entries, and I see they are in my diction, with my name on them -- but the man in the pictures -- he's so very old. I cannot deny his resemblance to some of my kin. A little of my father. So much of my mother.

[He purses his cherub lips in a mixture of bemusement and frustration.]

Curious. Very curious. So tell me, lovelies. What manner of people does this secret kinsman of mine interact with, day by day? Is he a libertine such as I? Come now, don't be shy.

[With a chuckle, he steps back to allow him entry.]

So far as you know it, what's the year? [Bush eyes him warily, standing with his hands behind his back a little way inside.]

1769, Captain. [He returned from war at the age of twenty-three, some six years ago for him -- he is at present, though no one knows, recently escaped from prison. Renate barks in greeting at the visitor but lays her ears back and sniffs at his hands once he enters. She does not jump up.] Magnificent beast, is she not?

Dear Lord, man. I ain't even born yet.

But she is a prettier beast than I think I've seen.

Truly? [He grins, turning back toward him.] And here I would have asked you if you served during the Seven Years.

My war started in '93-- and has being running since. Twenty years of it and not over when I left.

Bloody affairs. [He shakes his head, tisking.] I returned home some six years ago. [He closes the door behind them and goes to pick up the goblets he's already poured, offering one to push.]

[Bush accepts, at least polite enough not to sniff it for quality. He expects it'll be pretty good; the French can at least be relied on for wine.]

What's our toast? Since you will not want 'victory at sea' or 'His Majesty, the King of England.'

To chance encounters, then. [He doesn't bother kissing the asses of royals even when they're right in front of him; why toast them when they're not around?]

[He takes a much more cautious drink to that.]

You seem to be managing all right-- though it must be pretty strange.

I am in comfortable surroundings, albeit with strange garb. [He doesn't like this other De Sade's wardrobe choices; how is he to show off his calves with long trousers? LONG TROUSERS. HONESTLY.] Good wine, good food, a variety of interesting people to entertain. [Grin.] I could be worse off.

You must be more more used to luxury than me. I was suspicious of my shower at first but soon after I came to love it quite a bit.

I love a good adventure. This is by far the most enjoyable ship I've ever set foot upon.

I hope it continues so. We've had enough stormy weather a while.

[This unsettles him a little.] I wasn't aware this place had weather. It seemed to be decidedly absent, in fact.

Not usually... literally. But moods and magic have a hold over this hulk. Hence your presence and a man quite a bit your senior.

[A breath] I'm somewhat relieved either way. I mean no offense to your profession, Captain, but I find travel by sea to be completely unbearable.

[Bush harumphs, disapproving.]

Soldiers often do, I find. I'd rather be out at sea than anywhere, most days.

[He waves that off.]

I'm hardly a soldier anymore.

Gentlemen even moreso. [Bush lifts his chin.]

[He pouts] Oh dear, I believe I've gone and offended you, haven't I?

Not at all. I've only noted that gentlemen prefer the infantry and the infantry aren't suited for life at sea.

Some of us couldn't buy commissions; we had to earn'm.
