Empathy for their situation expressed through action. I had to do a lot of research and take a lot of time to figure out why we lost ground, and what she thought I needed to do to make up for it. Not all Inmates are as transparent as an eighteen year old girl who makes no secret of her unhappiness, though. She talked to a lot of people.

I'm new enough that this probably isn't good advice, but you can have it anyway.

At least my inmate's progressed from ranting about how we are all clearly figments of his giant brain to calling us all insane. It's progress insofar as he's at least accepted the reality of the situation.

Of course, then he went and behaved monstrously and doesn't quite seem to have grasped why you shouldn't do the things he did, so—one step forward, three steps back.

Sirrus and I are very different people and I have a tendency to piss him off more than I help.

I guess that's the short and long of it. Inmates are people too and they hold grudges, pass judgment and screw up just like we do.

What I do is try to relate. I've gone out on limbs and given examples on WHY I understand Sirrus did the shit he did and why and how I'd try to redeem myself for the stuff I did in relevance to it.

It's really helped. I dunno if it'd work for you though. Sirrus has made some pretty awesome strides.
